GONE Fishing Beginner Guide — How to Play

How to play GONE Fishing: the catch, sacrifice, sleep loop, a day-by-day first three days, hook and tension mechanics, and habits that keep a run alive.

How do you play GONE Fishing?

GONE Fishing is a loop of four actions: gather bait, catch fish, sacrifice fish at the altar to meet the lake’s daily quota, then sleep and do it again on a harder day. Miss too many quotas in a row and the lake breaks down your cabin wall and ends the run. Everything else — the trader, totems, gambling, cooking — exists to make the next quota easier.

This page is the order that actually works for your first three days, followed by the habits that keep a run alive past day twenty.

The core loop, step by step

  1. Grab a fishing rod from the cabin. Rods are cheap and eventually break; keep a spare when you can afford one.
  2. Collect bait on the way to water. Worms spawn around the cabin, frogs near the cabins and the island between them, spiders inside the second cabin, and minnows come from a trap you can leave running.
  3. Cast, then set the hook. Hold the mouse button to build power and release to cast. When a fish bites, click while the marker is in the green band — the closer to centre, the better the hook set and the easier the reel.
  4. Reel with tension in the green zone. Hold to reel in, release to let tension drop. Holding until tension collapses loses the fish. This is the single most common beginner mistake.
  5. Carry the fish to the altar and drop it in. The altar flame grows as you approach quota, and turns blue when the lake is satisfied. Blue means you can sleep safely.
  6. Sell what you do not sacrifice to the trader, who visits the cabin daily. Spend on rod and line levels before anything cosmetic.

Your first three days

Day one: score before the trader arrives

Take the shortest possible loop. Grab a rod, collect worms on the walk out, and fish short range so bites come fast — you are not chasing size on day one, you are chasing points before the trader shows up. Aim for a rod upgrade and a line upgrade on the first visit.

The two perks worth taking at the start are Sticky Hook and Fish Whisperer. Sticky Hook reduces the chance of losing a hooked fish, which is exactly the failure mode of a first-day player, and Fish Whisperer raises your fishing efficiency.

Day two: sell early, then fish the sea

The trader leaves. Get your fish sold first, before you go fishing, so you are not carrying inventory into the next session. With the proceeds, buy a better rod and start working saltwater — the shoreline species are worth several hundred points where the pond species are worth tens.

Day three: cook, gamble, and start thinking about depth

Cooking and gambling both multiply a fish’s point value, and because they multiply, the order does not matter. A 50-point fish cooked at +50% becomes 75; the same fish with the game’s luckiest 10x gamble becomes 500 and then 750 cooked. Gambling is the higher ceiling and the higher variance — gamble the fish you can afford to lose.

Day three is also when depth starts paying. Short-range fishing keeps the loop fast, but the species table behind this wiki shows the value cliff: pond fish top out in the low hundreds, while anything past 2,000 depth can be worth ten times that.

The mechanics that actually matter

Bait score, not bait quality

Your total bait score decides which fish can bite. It is the bait’s own value (Worm 15 up to Troll ragdoll 86) multiplied and added to by beer, day count, difficulty and totems. This is why a Worm casts the same on day 1 and day 30 but catches completely different species.

Depth

Deeper water means bigger fish and snapped lines. Every map has an accessible spot at 4,500+ depth. Do not fish deep until your line can take it — a snapped line costs you the bait and the fish at the same time.

Weather

Rain improves your catch quality, and thunderstorms are a stronger version of rain. On the Arctic map, snow is not a bonus: if it is snowing you must make quota that day or the run ends. Stock beer before a storm rather than during one.

The heart

The heart is a catchable item that works as an extra life. Sacrifice it at the altar as a solo player and the flames flash purple, giving you one chance to cheat death. In multiplayer the same sacrifice revives one fallen teammate. The solo extra life disappears if you leave the game, so re-sacrifice a fresh heart each session.

Night

Monsters come out after dusk. Most can be killed with a single well-placed TNT, but the Crab Queen takes two and the Troll takes three. The Flying NightTerrors, Hallucinations, Larry The Late Night Crab, the HEV and the Jumping Shark cannot be killed by any amount of TNT — run.

Ten habits that extend a run

  1. Set hook first, reel second. A bad hook set makes the reel nearly impossible.
  2. Never hold the reel until the line goes slack. Watch the tension bar, not the fish.
  3. Keep a Minnow trap running from minute one. Free bait, zero effort.
  4. Sell before you fish, not after. Inventory pressure causes bad decisions.
  5. Upgrade the line before the rod. The rod gates what you can land; the line gates what you survive.
  6. Cook what you cannot carry. Cooking is a free multiplier on points.
  7. Gamble only your second-best fish. The best one is your quota; the second one is your lottery ticket.
  8. Buy beer before rain, not during. Weather is the cheapest buff in the game.
  9. Buy Leviathan’s totem before any cosmetic. It is the multiplier everything else stacks on.
  10. On the Arctic, always assume you must make quota today. Snow turns a normal day into a run-ender.

Is GONE Fishing hard?

It is punishing rather than difficult. The failure states are almost all informational — you did not know the line would snap at that depth, you did not know snow forces quota, you did not know the hook set mattered. Once those are known, the game becomes a resource loop with a gambling problem attached, and the difficulty is mostly in how greedy you get at night.

  • Bait guide — the score the whole loop runs on
  • Totems — the first upgrade that changes your ceiling
  • Maps — which map to spend your second run on
  • Multiplayer — how the loop changes with a group

FAQ

How do you play GONE Fishing?
Gather bait, catch fish, sacrifice them at the lake altar to meet the daily quota, then sleep and face a harder day. Miss too many quotas in a row and the lake ends the run.
What is the best perk in GONE Fishing?
Sticky Hook first — it reduces the chance of losing a hooked fish, which is the main early failure. Fish Whisperer is the standard second pick for efficiency.
Should you gamble or cook fish first in GONE Fishing?
Either — both are multipliers on the same point value, so the order does not change the result. A 50-point fish cooked then gambled at 10x ends at 750, and gambled then cooked also ends at 750.
